Essilor Stellest Myopia Control Lens Available in the Philippines

For parents who are worried about their kids’ increasing nearsightedness, we have good news for you.  A new myopia control eyeglasses is now available in the Philippines. Essilor Stellest Myopia Control Lens is now available in the Philippines at Gold Heart Optical.

The Essilor® Stellest®Lens is the first eyeglass lens that is approved by the US FDA for slowing down myopia.

The lens uses Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target (H.A.L.T.) technology, which features 11 concentric rings of aspheric lenslets to create the necessary defocus to slow down the increase in eyegrade. The HALT lenslets have varying power and asphericity by ring—each ring’s lenslets share the same design, but moving from the center outwards, the geometry is adjusted to create a gradient of defocus power.

There are different mechanisms being investigated in why a lot of our kids have progressive myopia, and one of the mechanisms is the defocus theory. This theory believes that conventional single vision lenses allow light entering the eye to be focused centrally,  but light coming from the side focus behind the retina. This signals the eye to inform the brain that there are some light rays not yet focused, which signals the eye to grow longer to focus them, increasing myopia.   What the lenslets do is create different powers on the same lens to redirect the rays of light to properly focus on the peripheral retina.

How effective is Essilor® Stellest®Lens ? It was found that:
  • Children wearing Essilor® Stellest® lenses showed an eyegrade change of −0.25 D compared with −0.90 D in the conventional eyeglass-wearing group, representing a 71% reduction in myopia progression over two years.
  • Children wearing Essilor® Stellest® lenses showed an average increase in eyeball length of 0.21 mm compared to 0.45 mm in the conventional eyeglasses group, which corresponds to a 53% reduction in axial elongation over two years.
  • 75% of eyes in the Essilor® Stellest® group progressed less than 0.50 D over two years, compared to only 36% of eyes in the single vision group.
59% of Filipino children are myopic as of 2025.  Although myopia control eyeglasses are available, lifestyle changes for our kids and teens are still recommended.  Encouraging kids to have outdoor activities instead of spending hours on their devices can also make a big difference.

High nearsightedness puts kids at risk to develop glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment, and myopic retinal degeneration.  We partner with you in taking care of your children’s eyes.

At Gold Heart Optical Centre, we are excited to offer Essilor® Stellest®Lens in the Philippines, another option for our pediatric patients.
